Careers for Life – Careers for Life: My Career Pathways is a custom-published resource, designed specifically for the new Saskatchewan Career Education curricula for Grades 6-9. This resource was designed in conjunction with the Saskatchewan Ministry of Education, and is endorsed by the Minister of Education.

“Take Our Kids to Work™ is an annual national program in which grade 9 students are hosted by parents, relatives and volunteers at workplaces across the country. The program supports career development by helping students connect school, the world of work and their own futures.” (TOKW homepage).
Ready for Work
The ready for work binder is a GREAT resource that can be used by CWEX, Social Studies, Middle Year career education, and a variety of practical and applied arts to name a few. They offer training to assist teachers to become familiar with the binder and how to implement it. Topics and lessons provides in the binder are occupational health and safety, WHMIS, hazard identification, fairness and labour standards, rights and responsibilities, and much more. There are also a variety of fact sheets, cd-rom, and videos that are available for teachers. Provided below are links to some of their resources.

The City – “The City is a learning program developed by the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) and the British Columbia Securities Commission (BCSC). It teaches young people financial skills that they can carry with them throughout their lives.” Free on-line workshops are available, and if you take part in one you will receive the manual for free. The original cost is $50. Classes that can utilize the resources and lessons in “The City” are Life Transitions, Math 10, Accounting and other practical and applied arts course. Some lesson topics are: needs, wants, and priorities; income, expenses and budgets; saving and banking; credit and debt; investing and financial plan.

This book is sponsored by Investors Group and created by the Canadian Foundation for Economic Education. The purpose of the book is to provide youth with information that will help them better understand the world of money and enable them to make responsible decisions about their future and finances. The book can be ordered or downloaded. There is also a teacher’s guide, parent’s guide and many other features on their website to assist students in building their knowledge in personal finance. Check out the Money and The Economy section of the website. There are number of documents relating to money and the Canadian economy. There is also a very comprehensive list of other sites that can be used as a resource for teachers and students.

A non-profit organization that offers a wide variety of programs at affordable prices through unique partnerships with public and private sector agencies. The purpose is to help people of all ages with their career planning and to help them become intentional, purposeful and self-reliant when it comes to making informed choices about their future lifestyle and work. Some of their projects are: The Real Game Series; Blueprint for Life/Work Designs; Smart Options and Destinations 2020. They also work with provincial coordinators to offer training in their programs.

The Real Game Online Series – http://www.realgameonline.ca/
This site is very similar to the above resource except that it is an on-line version. Saskatchewan is actually the first province to create its own edition which was launched on April 2, 2009 by the Education Minister, Honourable Ken Krawetz. “The Saskatchewan version brings career and life planning into the classroom, while reflecting the province’s unique economic and labour market realities, as well as social and cultural perspectives.” Those who would like more information please contact your superintendent of curriculum and instruction and/or Jim Savage at jsavage@sasked.gov.sk.ca, Coordinator of Career Development, Saskatchewan Ministry of Education.

Skills Connect Saskatchewan: Linking Industry and Youth
Youth video presentation (29 minutes) and Industry video presentation (12 minutes). You can order the videos through the SK Media Video Duplication Group (www.video.db.mg.sk.ca). The video only costs $1.88 and is a great resource to demonstrate what Saskatchewan has to offer and to learn more about the different industries.
