Teachers

A great video to demonstrate to students how the world around them is changing and
therefore affecting their education, career and work goals.

Did you know?  3.0 – 2009 Edition

Introduction:

It is our role as educators to assist students in their learning and growth.  Career development is an essential component that addresses those needs.  It provides us an opportunity to show students the application and purpose of their current studies to the community and world around them.  That makes education both meaningful and relevant which keeps students motivated and engaged in their learning. The goal is to have students take ownership and develop essential skills that will assist them with their future endeavours.

Saskatchewan Career Development History and Background:

Career Development in the Saskatchewan

“In 2001, the Department of Education adopted the Blueprint for Life/Works Designs as the scope and sequence for the integration of career development competencies into the Core Curriculum.”

The framework provided describes career competencies from early childhood into adulthood.  It was developed in collaboration with individuals from Canadian provinces and territories.  A not-for-profit organization called National Life/Work Centre published the blueprint.

The Framework has eleven competencies grouped into three sections:

-        Personal Management

-        Learning and Work Exploration

-        Life/Work Building

Training, in the form of workshops, has been offered in the past and will likely be offered in the future (talk to superintendent of curriculum and instruction).  The goal is to introduce the blueprint to teachers and administrators so they can learn more about the framework and how to incorporate the competencies in their classrooms and schools.

Holy Trinity Catholic School Division requires teachers to keep track of the competencies integrated into their classes.  The required monthly reports may be done electronically or manually.  The data is gathered, accumulated, and assessed.  The information is then used to re-evaluate goals and to update the division’s career development action plan.

Blueprint for Life/Work Designs

Career development helps people at all stages of life examine their life directions, career options, and giftedness. The Blueprint covers valuable strategies that will allow individuals to develop new skills that will help them transition to new life and career realities.

Continuing Improvement Framework (CIF)

The four current provincial priorities identified in the CIF initiatives are:

  • Strong system-wide accountability and governance
  • High levels of literacy and achievement
  • Equitable opportunities to learn and succeed
  • Smooth transitions into and through the system -  Expectation that student movement will be supported into, through, and from high school to post-secondary education or the workforce.
