Optimist International Essay Contest ($2500)- Deadline:  February, 2012
Essay topic:  How My Education is Key to a Successful Future.
For youth under the age of 19 as of December 31, 2010.  Interested students must contact their local Optimist Club.

The Fountainhead Essay Contest InformationDeadline:  April 26, 2012

Eligibility:  11th and 12th Graders
First prize:  $10 000
Other prizes:  2 x $5000; 10 x $1000; 45 x $100; 175 x $50

Write an essay between 800 – 1000 words on one of the three topics based on Ayn Rand The Fountainhead.

A & E Network’s 2010 “LIVES THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE” - Deadline:  December 15, 2011

Invites students in grades 5-12 to write an essay based on someone they think has made an important impact on Canadian Society. Students, teachers and schools can win cash prizes of up to $3000.

CBC Literacy Awards ($4000 – $6000 in each category)Deadline:  Dates vary depending on category (Short Story Nov. 1; Creative Non-Fiction Feb. 1; Poetry May 1)

Description: Canadian citizens or permanent residents.  Submit original and unpublished work in one of the the three categories: short story (2,000 – 2500 words), creative nonfiction (2000 – 2500 words) or poetry (1000 – 2000 words).

Prairie Messenger – Catholic Journal – no awards but a great opportunity to get published

The Mathieu Costa Challenge - unsure if it is being continued - Deadline: ?

Penguin Poetry Contest

Looking ahead:  The theme is based on a picture.  What does the picture say to you? Is this the hand of? Is this the hand of Time? etc.  Deadline:  June 15, to be published Fall 2010.

Looking even further ahead:  The winter issue contest theme is ‘eating’.  Are you eating too much?  Does someone you know have an eating disorder? Why do some have more than enough to eat and others have nothing?  Send your poem and you could win!  Deadline:  September 15, 2010, to be published Winter 2010.

Penguin/What If? Pie by Piece

Create a personal experience peice about fitting in to Canadian society. Whether you moved here or where born here, tell us what struggles you might have faced or what it means to be Canadian.  Two winning peices will be published in What If?’s, What’s Your Story feature.  Deadline:  April 1, 2010.

Looking Ahead:  The theme is humour.  Everyone loves a good laugh.  Laughter is the best medicine.  Give our editors a good belly laugh and you could be What If? winner.  Deadline: June15, 2010 to be published Fall 2010.

Looking Even Further Ahead:  The winter issue contest theme is ‘What if…’.  this leaves things pretty open for you.  What if pigs could fly?  What if the sky turned green?  What is world peace broke out? Send them your ‘what if’ themed story and you could be a What If? winner.  Deadline:  September 15, 2010 to be published Winter 2010.
